Infra-red lamps are primarily used to heat the ambient air in the terrarium not surfaces. This is especially important for arboreal (tree-living) snakes, chameleons and lizards. Its great for nighttime heating as those invisible infra-red rays don’t disturb pets (or humans) while the red glow enables easy viewing of nocturnal behaviour! Remember that in winter you will probably need to buy a stronger (watts) to maintain the same temperature in your terrarium.
